  • Alex Yee wins gold in the men's triathlon
  •  England face Trinidad and Tobago in the netabll
  • Also today: cycling, rugby sevens, T20 cricket and squash

The first gold medal of these Birmingham Commonwealth Games goes to the home nation, courtesy of a stunning run from Alex Yee at the end of a thrilling men’s triathlon race.

Down by 15 seconds after the swim leg, and the same margin behind after the bike, Yee used his phenomenal running prowess to reel in the leading trio and take a historic victory for England.

Yee, who won Olympic silver last year, has almost unbeatable running pedigree: as a teenager, he ran the fastest 5,000 metres for a British junior since 1981 - quicker than Mo Farah. By the time he was 20, he posted the second-fastest UK parkrun time in history and claimed the British 10,000m title on the track as recently as 2018.

With his rivals locked in his sights in Birmingham, they simply had no answer. He picked off Tayler Reid and Jamie Riddle within minutes and drew alongside New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde approaching the final kilometre.

That Wilde was forced to take a 10-second penalty after failing to store his bike helmet correctly during the second transition mattered little - Yee would almost certainly have beaten him anyway.

His winning time was 50 minutes 34 seconds, with Wilde 13 seconds back in to take silver.
