Derby County manager Wayne Rooney was among the highest-earning athletes in the world during his time as a professional footballer.

The former England captain retired from football earlier this year, at the age of 35 – however, he still boasts an impressive fortune from his lengthy professional career.

Rooney went on to be appointed full-time manager of Championship side Derby County FC.

He had previously coached the team temporarily as a player-coach, but the former Manchester United captain decided it was time to focus on management.

At the time, Rooney said: "It's a great feeling to go into management full-time. It's something that I've been preparing for, working for for a few years now.

"Obviously had a taste of it over the last couple of months and I've enjoyed it."

So how much is Wayne Rooney's net worth now, after retiring from playing football? Here we take a look.

Wayne Rooney's net worth is estimated to be £122million, according to wealth website Celebrity Net Worth.

He reportedly earns a whopping £90,000 per week from his job as a coach for Derby.

But earlier in the year The Daily Mail reported that Rooney had referred a portion of his wage to ensure his players get paid.

The Championship club was experiencing a financial crisis while it waited for a takeover by Sheikh Khaled's Derventio Holdings to go through.

Rooney is on a two-and-a-half year contract, with similar terms to his playing deal.

However, he agreed for his wages to be spread over a longer period to reduce the team's short-term outgoings.

The 35-year-old is the highest-paid employee at the club, and agreed that he would not receive his full salary while there is a possibility that players could miss out.

Rooney has had a remarkable career since joining Everton as a 16-year-old in 2002, becoming the youngest Premier League goalscorer with a clash against Arsenal in October that year.

In 2004 he joined Manchester United for £27million, becoming the most expensive teenager in the world.

He stayed at the club for 13 years, during which time the team won five Premiere League titles, an FA Cup, four League Cups, the Europa League, the Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

He stayed with Everton for 18 months before moving to MLS side DC United, where he stayed for two seasons, before moving to Derby County.

The footballer finished with a career total of 313 club goals, as well as 53 goals and 120 caps for the England national team.
