London Landmarks Half 2021 date announced

Earlier this year, the London Landmarks Half Marathon, due to take place on Sunday 29 March was postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Race organisers announced today that 'it would not be practical to plan for another event this year.'

This year’s London Landmarks Half Marathon, which was due to take place on March 29 was first postponed and then cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But in great news for runners, the LLHM organisers, the baby charity Tommy’s, have announced that the 2021 event will be on Sunday 23 May 2021.

Even with a new covid-safe format, the event will still see 14,500 runners tackle the breathtaking route past the capital’s iconic landmarks.

More welcome news is that the 100 per cent not-for-profit event hopes to raise a much-needed £8 million for charities, many of which have suffered from reduced fundraising during the pandemic.

Race Director, Lia Fyles, explains: ‘The cancellation of the LLHM in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic had a huge impact on the many charities supported by our race so we are delighted to have secured a race date for 2021 which is in a later month in the year.

Why has the race been moved to May?
‘We know there is a still lot of uncertainty about events in the current climate,’ says Fyles, ‘so we are hopeful that this date provides a greater buffer against any potential future impact caused by the pandemic.’

LLHM have also announced a new ‘delivery partner’. The highly experienced Great Run Company, which organises the Great North Run, Great Manchester Run and Great South Run will take care of the event logistics.

How will the race ensure runner’s safety and prevent covid infections?

The race organisers and The Great Run Company are working to adapt the model and stage a socially distanced LLHM in 2021 if required.

‘Whilst we cannot predict where we will be as a nation in eight months’ time, our aim is to develop a flexible plan that can be adapted to follow the latest DCMS and Run Britain guidance to ensure appropriate social distancing measures are in place on race day if required,’ says Fyles.

‘We are looking to adapt many elements of the race from the assembly areas, the start and finish line experience, the route, feed stations, crowd flows, signage, communications, cheer stations and road closure timings.

Our modelling shows that we can safely accommodate up to 14,500 race starters within the space and time we have available and social distancing measures in place. We know runners may be nervous about returning to a race environment, but we will always put the safety of our LLHM community first.’

What is the theme for the 2021 LLHM?

In 2021, LLHM will shine a spotlight on the landmark moments which have seen the nation come together during the Covid-19 pandemic with its theme: ‘The Grand. The Quirky. The Hidden’ .

The Grand: Celebrating the grand, heroic and incredible actions and services delivered by the nation’s key workers.

The Quirky: Showcasing the quirky and light-hearted moments of lockdown life to make runners smile.

The Hidden: Remembering the daily kind gestures of neighbours and small sacrifices made that went unseen.

The organisers also plan to dedicate a mile of the route to running in memory of loved ones who passed away during the pandemic.

Fyles explains: ‘We want to use LLHM 2021 as a platform to pay tribute to our nation’s key workers, the true heroes of lockdown along with celebrating the moments of kindness and community spirit and remembering our loved ones who sadly passed away.’

When will the London Landmarks Half ballot open?

The ballot for LLHM 2021 will open in October and runners can pre-register their interest at
