Arnold Schwarzenegger sits outdoors with his pet donkey and dog

He has a host of four-legged friends to keep him company at his Los Angeles home.

And Arnold Schwarzenegger was joined by his pet donkey Lulu and dog Dutch for a social media snap on Thursday as he worked on his digital newsletter outdoors while counting down the hours until his 74th birthday.

The Terminator star sat down in a leather chair with a cigar placed on a table next to him as his curious pets leaned over to 'help' with his work.

Arnold was seen wearing glasses, a grey T-shirt and shorts as he appeared to be talking to his furry pals.

He captioned the Instagram photo: 'Getting some help finishing up my newsletter so I can send it out to celebrate my birthday tomorrow. Sign up at the link in my bio!'

The actor lives with his cute donkey, miniature horse Whiskey, dogs Noodle, Cherry and Dutch, and girlfriend Heather Milligan in a sprawling mansion in the Pacific Palisades neighbourhood.

He is the father to Katherine, 31, Christina, 30, Patrick, 27, Christopher, 23, and Joseph Baena, 23, as well as the grandparent to Lyla Maria Pratt, the daughter of Katherine and actor Chris Pratt.

While appearing remotely on Jimmy Kimmel Live in April, he discussed becoming a grandfather for the first time after his daughter and her husband Chris 41, welcomed their baby girl last August.

'Fantastic,' Arnold said of being a grandfather. 'The only thing is it makes me feel old.'

'It's really great having a grandchild. It's a beautiful, beautiful baby. Baby Lyla. I'm very proud of Katherine and Chris and they're doing really great together as parents,' the veteran actor added.

Jimmy, 53, noted that Arnold has farm animals roaming around his house and predicted that Lyla was going to go 'crazy' when she realises her grandfather lives in a 'petting zoo'.

'Oh, she has already been over here several times at the house and she's sat on top of Lulu and Whiskey and I think she's going to be a great horseback rider,' Arnold said, referencing his pets.

Jimmy then asked Arnold if he's done any baby-sitting or changing diapers with Lyla.

'I did all of that when I had kids,' he responded. 'When my kids were growing up, I participated and it was a lot of fun to do that. But I have never changed diapers on Lyla because I think that Katherine is the expert gatekeeper.

'Whenever you touch the baby she says, ''Oh my god, oh my god, don't hold her like this''. I say, ''Katherine, come on now. I've held enough children in my hands.''

'I say, ''I know exactly what I'm doing, I'm an expert at that stuff''. She just freaks out. I think it's natural,' Arnold said. 'It's fun,' he added.
