Six Premier League stars called up to Germany squad as Joachim Low makes double U-turn

Joachim Low has named six Premier League stars in Germany’s squad for Euro 2020, while also giving eye-catching recalls to Mats Hummels and Thomas Muller.

Arsenal ’s Bernd Leno is one of three goalkeepers to make the grade alongside Manuel Neuer and Kevin Trapp.

Neuer is likely to be first choice, with Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen missing out owing to an impending knee operation .

Chelsea ’s Antonio Rudiger and Leeds’ Robin Koch have been included among Low’s defenders, while Rudiger’s teammate Kai Havertz and Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan will compete for starting spots in midfield.

Timo Werner is the last Premier League representative in the squad, having been named among the forwards despite a difficult first season in England.

The fact that Hummels and Muller have made the squad will raise a few eyebrows in Germany, given that Low announced in March 2019 that he would no longer consider them or Bayern teammate Jerome Boateng for selection.

“2019 is the year of a new start for the German national team,” he said at the time. “In the year of qualifying for the European Championship 2020, we are sending a clear signal of renewal.

“The young national team players will have the space they need to fully develop… we want to give the team a new face. I am convinced that this is the right step.”

Hummels has since moved back to Borussia Dortmund and has come into form towards the end of the season. Muller has had an excellent campaign with Bayern, scoring 15 goals in 45 appearances and securing his ninth consecutive Bundesliga title at the Allianz Arena.

Asked about his decision to reintegrate them back into the national team set-up, Low said: “You can interrupt an overhaul under the circumstances.

“In the defence we did not have the desired stability recently. Mats is a player who influences other players and brings experience.”

Muller responded to his recall by tweeting “back again”, along with a photo of him grinning and giving a thumbs-up. Hummels tweeted: “I am really happy and proud to play for [Germany] again.”

Explaining his decision not to bring back Boateng as well as Muller and Hummels, Low said: “We respect him a lot.

“He’s done a lot for Germany… it doesn’t change what a great player Boateng is.”

Among the other striking inclusions in the squad is Jamal Musiala, the 18-year-old Bayern midfielder.

Having represented England up to under-21s level, Musiala, who was born in Stuttgart, declared that he would represent Germany at senior level earlier this year.
