Love Island's Maura Higgins opens up on horrific sexual assault by taxi driver

Love Island star Maura Higgins has given her horrifying account of being sexually assaulted by a taxi driver.

The 31 year old revealed what happened during the shocking incident as she answered a fan’s question during a Q&A session on Instagram Stories.

Maura, who had gone for a sunny walk by a lake, told her 3.5 million followers listening in: "I had an incident with a taxi driver a long time ago in Ireland.

"Silly me, I fell asleep. My friends were dropped off before me and I was dropped off alone because I lived alone at the time.

"I woke up and his hand was right up my skirt.

"Honestly, I sobered up so quickly. I mesmerised his taxi number so quick and still remembered it the next day."

Before discussing the disturbing encounter, Maura had told her fans she’d had “a few” bad encounters with men, as she prefaced: “The worst one I’ve never ever, ever, opened up to any of you about, and I don’t even think I’m ready yet.

“It was, like, probably one of the scariest things that’s ever happened to me.”

Maura gained much love among viewers during her 2018 stint on Love Island for her frank-talk and bubbly personality - particularly when it came to discussing women and sex.

Her openness on the subject led Islander Tom Walker to say to the lads: “It’ll be interesting to see if she’s all mouth or not” to which she snapped back saying that just because she talks about sex, doesn’t mean she’ll be having it with him.

The Irish beauty became something of a feminist icon following her sharp response in the villa, praised by female viewers up and down the country.

In 2019, Maura responded to her positive reception, telling Grazia: “I mean, obviously, I’m flattered. I never realised I was a feminist!

“I just stand up for myself, and I won’t let anyone talk sh*t about me. And you know, I do talk about sex, but so do guys.

“I think a lot of women are afraid to talk about sex, but it’s a natural thing. Why not talk about it? I grew up always being able to talk to my mammy and daddy. I don’t feel ashamed.”

Maura also had some wise advice for younger women who saw that moment on the series: “Stick up for yourself.

“Don’t let anyone walk all over you. Voice your opinion. There’s no point hiding away.”
