Jason and Laura Kenny accidentally ignored email offering them knighthood and damehood
Sir Jason and Dame Laura Kenny have revealed that they accidentally ignored the email that offered them their knighthood and damehood.
The Olympic couple were included on the 2022 New Year’s honours list following their remarkable efforts to their respective sports whilst representing Team GB.
Collectively the pair have an impressive 11 Olympic gold medals between them, as Jason has seven to his name whilst wife Laura has four.
The Kenny’s were two of 78 Team GB Olympians and Paralympians included on the list, however the pair have told of the hilarious moment they found out they had been honoured.
In an interview with ITV Sir Jason and Dame Laura admitted that they accidentally ignored the initial email invite for the knighthood and damehood, with the former even mixing it up with a parking ticket he had collected.
When asked how they found out about the awards Dame Laura revealed: “You get sent an email, don’t you.
“And you are supposed to reply to this email but neither of us actually replied to said email.”
A laughing Jason then added: “We got confused with the date because I got a parking ticket at the same time and I had to pay the parking ticket before the 14th... So we got a bit confused with our response dates."
Daily Mirror/Andy Stenning Jason and Laura Kenney joked about nearly missing their Honours list invite.
He then revealed that they received a phone call to finally confirm their acceptance, joking that the pair didn’t want to keep the Queen and Prime Minister waiting any longer.
The 33-year-old said: "So we had a phone call - it was a funny phone call.
“The lady on the end was very nice and said 'could you let us know before the weekend because we've got to tell the prime minister and the Queen about it'.
"I was like, well, best not to keep them waiting!"
Following the mix-up wife Laura then went on to reveal that the feeling when the honour finally sunk in was ‘incredible’ and beyond her ‘childhood dreams’.
She commented: “Every time we step on the track it's to try and win a medal. Any other accolade, you never strive to get, but when you do get it, it just shows that people are appreciating the hard work you are putting in on the track.
“It just feels incredible to be recognised for that. You never in your childhood dreams think you're going to be a dame or a sir.”
