Saint Lucians rejoiced as Julien Alfred won gold in the women’s 100m title at Paris 2024, making history as the country’s first Olympic medallist.

The 23-year-old took the top spot at 10.72 seconds, as Team USA athletes Sha’Carri Richardson and Melissa Jefferson took silver at 10.87 and bronze at 10.92 respectively.

Saint Lucia has competed at seven Olympic Games but had not won a medal until Saturday, 3 August.

Alfred paid tribute to her father after her victory, saying: “He passed away in 2013. Dad, this is for you. I miss you. I did it for him, I did it for my coach and God.”
