Former Ajax footballer Jerge Hoefdraad, 35, fighting for his life

Former Ajax player Jerge Hoefdraad remains in a critical condition and is fighting for his life after he was shot in the head following his attempt to break up an argument at a party in Amsterdam.

It was wrongly reported in Holland on Monday that Hoefdraad, 35, had died after sustaining serious injuries, but the police have now confirmed that the initial statement was incorrect.

Instead, Hoefdraad, who played at Ajax as a youngster alongside Ryan Babel, is in hospital - with police apologising to his family.

A statement from the police in Amsterdam said: 'To our regret, the message was incorrectly reported this afternoon of the death of the 35-year-old victim of the shooting incident on Stekkenbergweg.

'He is in a very critical condition in hospital. We deeply regret this and apologize to his family.'

Babel paid tribute to his former team-mate as he posted a tweet with Hoefdraad's name and a crying face, but it has now surfaced that the star is still alive.

He broke into senior football at RKC Waalwijk and went on to have three spells at Almere City.

In addition, the winger also played for Telstar and Cambuur.

Hoefdradd represented Cambuur between 2011 and 2013, making 43 league appearances.

He most recently played for ASC De Volewijckers this year.
