This Morning fans slam Beverley Turner over 'deplorable' Meghan Markle swipe

This Morning viewers were unimpressed on Thursday, as broadcaster Beverley Turner took aim at Meghan Markle's 40th birthday video.

The skit featuring American actress Melissa McCarthy, as well as a funny cameo from Meghan's husband Prince Harry, was released overnight.

The Duchess, who recently welcomed her second child, has marked her 40th birthday by launching a new campaign to help women get back to work following the coronavirus pandemic.

While the clip has divided viewers, Meghan used the video and her celebrity pal's involvement to share her new initiative, 40x40, to help support and mentor women, many of whom had to leave the workplace in the past year and a half.

She revealed: "For my birthday, I have asked 40 friends, activists, athletes, artists, and world leaders to help kick off a global effort by contributing 40 minutes of mentorship to support women re-entering the workforce.

"With this time, I hope they each help someone advance a professional life on her own terms... I hope that they inspire countless others to give 40 minutes of their time as well."

But even the positive message behind it wasn't enough to stop This Morning guest Beverley from taking a swipe.

Calling it "not funny" and claiming it "missed the mark", she was slightly backed by fellow guest Matthew Wright who claimed it was "cringe".

Host Ruth Langsford interjected Beverley's series of digs at the American actress, handing over to Matthew before he too mocked it.

Beverley said: "The principle behind it is great and we know that loads of women across the world have lost their jobs, but there's so much Meghan Markle in this.

"I was personally surprised that she was 40 because in many ways so much of what she says and does seems like somebody with much less wisdom.

"And also we realised that she's just not very funny, it just wasn't funny at all.

"I know this idea when she takes the mickey out of herself, it's quite self-deprecating under the tree but it's just hammy and it misses the mark.

"And when she started by saying to Melissa McCarthy 'I've got an idea', you just felt like there must be meetings that go on every week with her people where she starts a meeting like that and everyone goes 'ugh, what's going to happen now, what's she going to say now?'."

Viewers slammed Beverley's comments though, and Matthew's too, with this not being the first time Beverley has made comments about Meghan on the show.

One viewer tweeted: "How did a lighthearted skit and heartfelt initiative to help women turn into an invitation to question Meghan’s 'wisdom'?

"If that was Kate & Wills you all would be GUSHING over them. It’s deplorable that you’re so desperate to find reasons to criticise Meghan even now."

Another agreed: "#ThisMorning slating Meghan to the ground again. Obviously the video she put out wasn’t meant to be taken seriously, why they analysing every second of it?"

A third added: "Just say you don’t like Meghan Markle & move on #thismorning," while a fourth viewer said: "I think we have established that Bev really does not like Meghan Markle."
