A jockey tragically died after falling from his horse during a race.

Pietro Alberto Brocca was riding at San Rossore racecourse in Pisa when he fell heavily in an incident on the home bend.

The 22-year-old was making headway aboard Ziupascale when his mount tripped over.

Brocca, who was from Sardinia, suffered a serious head injury and several fractures.

Reported to be unconscious on the track last Thursday, he was rushed to Cisanello hospital for treatment, but sadly he passed away three days later.

A post on San Rossore racecourse's Facebook page, translated to English, said: "We are all disheartened and speechless for the passing of Pietro Alberto Brocca, close to his family and all his friends in pain."

A resident of Mores, the young rider was the son of horse trainer Francesco Brocca.

He won 11 races during his career, from 61 rides.

"Pietro Alberto was a really good boy," the mayor of Mores, Peppino Ibba, told local news publication Unione Sarda.

"I always remember him proud and proud riding his horses. For us it is a huge loss.

"On behalf of the whole community I offer my deepest condolences to the family."

Racing fans also took to social media to pay tribute.

One said: "Such sad news regarding Italian jockey Pietro Alberto Brocca. Thinking of his family, friends and colleagues. RIP Pietro."
