The 45-year-old is seen being punched and chased around a house in the devastatingly realistic video, which is a collaboration with composer Fabio D’Andrea for Women’s Aid.

Mel has previously claimed she was in a violent relationship with ex-husband Stephen Belafonte for years and how she struggled to break out of his “reign of terror”. He strongly denies her claims.

In an interview with ITV News Mel said: “I was married for 10 years and I did find the strength to leave, but then I ended up going back… it was just an impossible situation for me. When you are in that kind of relationship, it literally feels impossible to get out because you're isolated.

"Some women don't have access to their phones, even their finances. Like in my situation, you are completely cut off from a regular normal world. What becomes your normality is living in an abusive relationship with no way out, but there is help.”

In the video Mel is dragged around the house trying to escape from a violent partner who is assaulting her, eventually managing to flee out of the house.

The makeup is brutal and realistic and will shock many people, it’s hoped that the realistic nature of the video will help those struggling with similar situations.

Mel B told The Sun: “I have a responsibility to make sure these situations are portrayed as realistically as possible. I looked at all the emails I’ve received from women who have read my book and handpicked some to help me with the acting. Whether it be the spitting or the strangulation, these are things that actually happen.

"They are not just my story — they are all these women’s stories. I came out of making that video with bruises because I wanted it to be an honest representation of what we have all gone through.”

Mel and Stephen have daughter Madison together and Mel also has her girls Phoenix and Angel from previous relationships. She divorced Belafonte in 2018 after reaching a settlement in court.

As part of their divorce settlement, Mel B was ordered to pay Stephen's £270,000 legal fees and £3,800-a-month in child support for their daughter Madison. The settlement also saw the abuse charges against Stephen dropped.

The couple has had numerous custody battles over Madison and currently have joint custody, with Madison living in Los Angeles with her father while Mel resides primarily in the UK.

The Spice Girl accused Stephen of coercion, physical abuse and claimed that he was a frequent cocaine and alcohol abuser, claims he denied.

The video aims to highlight the issue of domestic violence in the UK after worrying statistics estimated 1.6million women in England and Wales experienced domestic abuse in the year ending March 2020, with women aged 16 to 24 at most risk.

The issue of domestic violence has worsened due to women and children being isolated with their abusers during Covid-19 lockdowns.

Teresa Parker, Head of Communications for Women’s Aid, said: “This video and classical song release is a powerful, emotional portrayal of domestic abuse, based on the many conversations that Melanie has had with survivors since becoming Patron of Women’s Aid two years ago. The story told in the video is the reason why we desperately need domestic abuse services for women and children, survivors are very often running for their lives at the point when they try to access help.”
