Two Formula 2 drivers rushed to hospital after horror Saudi Arabia GP crash

Formula 2 drivers Enzo Fittipaldi and Theo Pourchaire were rushed to hospital after a horror crash at the start of the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix.

Pourchaire, 18, failed to start his car as the lights went out to begin the race, with several members of the paddock managing to avoid driving into the back of him.

But Fittipaldi, 20, could not avoid a collision, driving into the back of his fellow driver's car in a scary incident on the track in Jeddah.

Debris was sent flying through the air and the race was quickly red flagged.

Eyewitness Sean Kelly tweeted that Pourchaire gave the thumbs up as he was loaded into the ambulance.

And L'Equipe reported that Fittipaldi had been airlifted to hospital, but was conscious. There are no further updates on the condition of either driver.

Formula 2 confirmed that the race would restart at 3.45pm UK time.

A statement from the FIA said: "The FIA advises that incident occurred during the FIA Formula 2 Feature Race start today, 05/12/21, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, involving car #10, Théo Pourchaire, and car #14, Enzo Fittipaldi.

"The drivers were immediately attended to by emergency and medical crews. The drivers were conscious and extricated by the attending medical crews. Both have been transferred by ambulance and helicopter to King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital, Jeddah."

Pourchaire made his F2 debut in 2020 and has entered 15 races so far, claiming two wins.

He won the French F4 Junior Championship in 2018 and the ADAC Formula 4 title in 2019.

Fittipaldi debuted in F2 this year having started 30 F3 races.

He won the Italian F4 championship in 2018.
