Marcus Rashford responds to London mayor Sadiq Khan with powerful Liverpool message

Marcus Rashford has told Sadiq Khan he will pledge himself to tackling child food poverty in Liverpool and across the United Kingdom.

The Manchester United star has launched a task force to expand the free school meals programme after his work helped ensure 1.3million children continued to receive food into the summer holidays.

London mayor Khan wrote to Rashford on Monday thanking him for his "inspiring work", to which the England international responded: "More determined than ever, thank you for your kind words."

And following up his letter, Khan wrote: "As a Liverpool fan, it wasn’t easy being complimentary about a Man Utd star.. but on this issue I couldn't agree more.

"Every child should have the right to healthy, affordable and sustainable food, no matter their circumstances."

In response, Rashford called for rivalries to be put to one side in recognition of the critically important task of ending food poverty amongst children.

"I do what I do for Liverpool as much as anywhere," the 22-year-old said on Twitter. "Children all over the UK are crying out for our help.

"This is much bigger than me, than football, than politics. It’s time we all started listening, instead of clouding our views will allegiances and rivalries."

Meanwhile, Liverpool star Andy Robertson recently tipped Rashford to receive a "standing ovation" at Anfield for his charitable work.

"The two words that everyone’s saying [during the pandemic] are ‘Marcus Rashford’," the Scotland captain told The Times .

"He made politicians overturn the decision [not to extend free school meals] because he wanted every kid to get fed. What he’s done was amazing, outstanding.

Robertson added: “Once the fans are back in, Marcus Rashford could be the first Man United player to get a standing ovation here [Anfield].

"He’d definitely deserve it because thousands of families are getting fed now.”
